The International School Augsburg is an IB World school. It is open for admission to students of all nationalities, races and religion. The school seeks to enrol students who will thrive in its environment and benefit from its programmes. Applications for places will be accepted throughout the school year.

    Selection Criteria

Assuming the school can cater for the child’s needs, preference will be granted in the following order:

    1. Children of expatriate families
    2. Siblings of students at ISA
    3. Local German students

    Admissions Procedure

    1. The Application Form is completed and student reports from previous schools are submitted. For Grade 1 applicants, a confidential ‘Kindergarten Statement’ is required from the child’s Kindergarten.
    2. Receipt of paperwork is acknowledged.
    3. Paperwork is reviewed by Head of School. If child is deemed a possible good match for ISA, the parents are contacted and he/she is invited for a trial day. A time is scheduled with the German or EAL teacher where appropriate
    4. The class teacher completes a Trial Day Feedback form based on observations of the student. The EAL and German teachers are consulted where relevant. There is no formal screening process. In some cases the child may be asked to complete a short written assessment in language or maths.
    5. The child and his parents are invited to an interview with the Head of School or the relevant section (Upper School Principal or PYP Coordinator). During the interview, the child is informally assessed as to his suitability and the degree to which his needs can be met at ISA.
    6. With parent approval, the child’s previous school may be contacted for additional information.
    7. The Head of School makes the final decision on all applicants.
    8. Parents are informed in writing of the acceptance/rejection of their application
    9. Parents return a slip stating acceptance/rejection of the place
    10. The child is placed on the appropriate class list by the Head of School or principal

During the interview with the Head of School, families are informed of the nature and expectations of the IGCSE and IB Diploma courses. As German universities will only recognise these qualifications under certain conditions, applying families are provided with this information so that they can make the best decision for their child. Families are also advised as to the nature of language learning including the importance of mother tongue and the time needed for students to develop academic language (CALP)

    Age Requirement

Students must meet the age requirement of the grade in question on or before September 1st of that school year,(i.e. students entering grade 1 must be 6 years old on or before September 1st and so on). Due to the now more flexible ruling for Bavarian state schools, ISA may consider students whose birthdays fall before December 31st. Students are placed according to age, prior school experience and suitability as assessed at the interview. In general, exceptions are not made to this rule.

    Disclosure Clause

As ISA does not yet have a Special Needs department, the school cannot accept students whose learning needs cannot be met within the regular classroom. Students accepted into the Early Learning Centre are not automatically guaranteed a place in grade one. In cases where the Head of School feels the school environment is not appropriate for the students learning or behavioural needs, the family will be asked to withdraw their son/daughter.

Parents must not withhold any information for the school which could be misleading in terms of the assessment of the student. Should it transpire that relevant information has been withheld from the school, it could result in cancellation of the acceptance. Such information could include psychologists’ reports, diagnosis of learning difficulties, disciplinary action taken at other schools, special education requirements or a medical condition.

    Probationary Admission

In some cases, a student will be granted probationary acceptance. In such cases a timeline along with specific criteria will be agreed between the Head of School and the parents. These will vary from case to case.
