  • Primary Years Programme

ISA is an authorised IB Primary Years Programme school. As such we are committed to a holistic education which encourages curiosity, independence, reflection and service. In order to be successful, our children need strong skills in thinking, research and self-management and excellent communication and interpersonal skills. Ultimately, they must learn to apply their knowledge in a thoughtful and constructive manner.
In the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, a strong emphasis is placed on how students learn as well as what they learn.  Classroom teachers teach Language, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies and Art, all within integrated units of inquiry and in single subject lessons. Specialist teachers teach German, Physical Education and Music. English as a Second Language (EAL) is offered to those with limited or no English language. At least once a week students visit the library with their class. To put learning in a real context, our students frequently go on field trips using the lovely city of Augsburg and its surroundings to enhance their learning.
Parents are an integral part of our community and we regard this relationship as a vital partnership. Respectful communication between parents and ISA staff is the basis of all learning is evident with the open door policy we have throughout our school, with every adult being a role model for our students at all times.

Useful tips on supporting your child as a language learner

Learning across the school year is divided into 6 trans-disciplinary units of approximately 6 weeks each. Through these units students are guided and supported as they inquire and explore concepts and gain new knowledge and skills.

    Mathematics

Mathematics is not viewed as a fixed body of knowledge. There are five strands: number, data handling, shape and space, pattern and function and measurement. These are often taught in the authentic contexts provided by the grade level units of inquiry. Children are encouraged to find more than one answer, to question their results and to talk about their learning.

    Language – German and English

There are four strands in the language curriculum: speaking, listening, reading and writing. The skills required to function successfully in school and beyond are partially acquired in the authentic contexts of the grade level units of inquiry. in addition, language skills are taught appropriate to grade level and student needs. Language learning is seen as a developmental process for which each student has his own preferred style and pace. Children are supported in becoming confident oral communicators, readers and writers in English. All students for whom English is not their first language receive extra language support during the school day. As far as possible, ISA is committed to supporting its students mother tongue. All students are expected to learn the host country language, German.

Drama lessons are an integral part of teaching and learning across the school. This discipline supports the development of communication, presentation and performance skills as well as enhancing confidence and creativity.
